A mind that is completely open accepts any information or beliefs it is given. This is similar to an individual that allows anyone to pour any substance into their drinking glass. This type of mind is extremely harmful because it allows itself to become filled with destructive substances. Individuals with minds that are completely open are often gullible and naïve. They are also potentially radical because they are open to accepting beliefs—such as distorted religious and political ideologies—that could destroy them. Hate groups such as the KKK, ISIS, and al-Qaeda thrive on individuals with completely open minds because they can fill them with all sorts of harmful beliefs and the individual will accept them at face value.
A mind that is completely closed accepts no information or evidence it is given. This is similar to an individual that does not allow anyone to pour any substances into their drinking glass; they are left to subsist only on what the glass originally holds and cannot receive further nourishment. This type of mind is extremely harmful because it does not receive new evidence or data that might be necessary to survive. Individuals with minds that are completely closed are often bigoted and intolerant. They are also potentially radical because they believe in narrow views and do not allow themselves to adapt and conform to universal truths. Groups that follow distorted religious and political beliefs often attempt to close the minds of their followers once they fill them with their twisted ideologies because it will ensure the individual will not change in the future and will move forward doing the group’s work without wavering.
A mind that is open but uses a filter is one that welcomes new information and beliefs but does not accept them without validating them first. This is similar to an individual that allows others to pour substances into their drinking glass only after they determine the substance is beneficial to them. This type of mind is very advantageous because it lends itself to being flexible and always seeking the truth. Individuals with this type of mind are often unbiased and tolerant. They are also scholarly because they are willing to change their beliefs once new evidence shows their original beliefs are erroneous.
Is it better to have a mind that is completely open or a mind that is completely closed? In the video below, find out which is best.
